You Be The Hero. We've Got Your Back!

Avoid Email Attacks & Protect Customers From Getting Threat Emails [Case Study]

The following is a threat email which is a common form of email attack that is now doing its rounds on the Internet. It is based on hackers infiltrating corporate Networks and getting hold of real banking information belonging to the recipients.

Here it is:

“I am well aware (Here it lists the recipients banking password) one of your passwords. Lets get directly to purpose. You may not know me and you are probably wondering why you are getting this e-mail? No-one has compensated me to check you.

Aactually, I actually setup a malware on the 18+ video clips (sex sites) website and guess what, you visited this website to have fun (you know what I mean). While you were viewing videos, your web browser initiated operating as a Remote Desktop having a keylogger which provided me with access to your screen as well as cam. Right after that, my software gathered your complete contacts from your Messenger, Facebook, as well as e-mailaccount. After that I created a double-screen video. 1st part displays the video you were watching (you’ve got a nice taste lmao), and 2nd part shows the recording of your web camera, yea its you.

You actually have not one but two choices. We will look at these types of possibilities in aspects:

1st choice is to neglect this message. In such a case, I am going to send your very own tape to almost all of your personal contacts and also think about regarding the awkwardness you feel. In addition in case you are in a romance, just how it would affect?

Next choice would be to give me $5000. We are going to regard it as a donation. Subsequently, I most certainly will quickly erase your video footage. You can continue on with your daily life like this never happened and you will never hear back again from me. You will make the payment through Bitcoin (if you do not know this, search for “how to buy bitcoin” in Google).

BTC Address: ********************************** (removed)
[CASE sensitive copy and paste it]

If you have been thinking about going to the authorities, look, this email message can not be traced back to me. I have taken care of my steps. I am just not trying to charge a fee so much, I simply prefer to be paid for.

You now have one day in order to make the payment. I’ve a special pixel within this mail, and now I know that you have read this e mail. If I don’t get the BitCoins, I will send out your video to all of your contacts including friends and family, co-workers, etc. However, if I do get paid, I’ll erase the recording immediately. If you really want evidence, reply with Yea! and I will send out your video to your 6 friends. It’s a non-negotiable offer that being said do not waste my personal time and yours by responding to this e mail.”

Sometimes the methods listed above are used in this kind of “cyber blackmail” and are legitimate. Others are fanciful. Also there are logical inconsistencies within the script. So while it’s possible the recipient downloaded a keylogger; it’s also possible the password was bought on the dark web. In any case the recipient should advise their bank. Change their passwords and don’t use the same one on multiple sites. Changing passwords often is a good idea too.
